'Ich bin ein Berliner!'

Such a famous phrase spoken by  U.S. President

John F Kennedy in his address in West Germany. It is meant to show his alliance with the country and to show that all free men from all countries were also from Berlin.

However, it is less commonly known that due to the use of the word 'ein' in his phrase what was actually understood as the literal translation was I'm a Doughnut. (Berliner being a small jelly doughnut popular in Germany). By using that one little word due to lack of knowledge of German diction he referred to himself as an object rather than a person.
